With the hope of Resurrection in Christ, we inform that Reverent Stephen F. Kanonik (age 68) passed away on Tuesday, January 7, 2025. He was a pastor at St. Ladislaus Parish in Chicago in years 1993-2005.
A funeral mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 15, 2025 at 10:00 AM at St. Benedict’s Church (2215 W. Irving Park Road, Chicago, IL 6061). The mass will be presided over by Most Reverend Bishop Robert G. Casey. Burial will take place at Maryhill Cemetery.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 14, 2025 from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at St. Benedict’s Church (2215 W Irving Park Road, Chicago, IL 6061).
Fr. Steve was ordained a priest in the Archdiocese of Chicago in 1982. He served as pastor of St. Bruno Parish on the South Side for six years. In 1988, he became pastor of St. Louise de Marillac Parish in LaGrange Park, where he served for five years. In 1993, he was installed as pastor of St. Ladislaus Parish, a Polish bilingual parish on the city’s North Side. After serving for 12 years, Fr. Kanonik was installed as pastor of St. Julian’s Parish in 2005 and was named dean of the II F deanery in 2010. In 2015, Archbishop Cupich announced that Father Steve had been named moderator of the curia. Father Steve has been pastor of St. Benedict Parish since 2017.
